Item description from seller

This is the Minnehaha Edition of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Evangeline, a Tale of Acadie, published in Chicago by Thompson & Thomas, with the copyright held by Van Cleve Andrews Co. and dated 1895 on the copyright page. This decorative gift-book format of Longfellow's 1847 narrative poem was issued and reissued under several Chicago imprints around the turn of the century, including Smith-Andrews Publishing Co. and others sharing the same text, illustrations, and binding design, so this should be understood as a popular reprint edition rather than a scarce or first printing. The poem itself remains one of the best-loved works in the American literary canon, tracing a young Acadian woman's lifelong search for her betrothed following the historical Expulsion of the Acadians. The binding is a striking example of period Art Nouveau gift-book design: sage-green cloth with a gilt title panel reading "Evangeline" framed by dark green vine and leaf borders stamped in blind, with "Longfellow" in gilt beneath. The gilt remains crisp and fully legible, and the boards are tight and square with no wear to the cloth. The spine is left plain, without lettering, consistent with how bindings of this style were often produced. The text block is complete with a frontispiece portrait of Longfellow and black-and-white illustrations throughout, generally clean and well-printed, with only light, isolated foxing near the gutter on a couple of pages. The front and rear free endpapers, however, show genuine scattered foxing across much of their surface, which keeps this copy at Very Good rather than a higher grade despite the strength of the binding. A faint pencil gift inscription, "Compliments of Frank [Nash?]," appears on the front free endpaper, adding a small note of period provenance. A handsome, structurally sound copy of a widely collected decorative edition, well suited to readers and collectors of American poetry and Victorian-era gift bindings.
