Print on Demand. This book introduces a method for studying how product development organizations operate and communicate, with a view to improving their performance. The author emphasizes that to create better products quickly, the level of coordination among team members must be strong. However, managing communication can be challenging due to the barriers that exist across organizational, cultural, and geographical boundaries in dispersed product development teams. This book provides a methodology to predict and measure the important communication linkages in a product development organization and to determine where and to what extent the necessary transfer of information takes place. The author conducted a case study in industry to test the methodology. The results demonstrate that essential technical interactions can be planned and do not necessarily require co-location. Additionally, unplanned, informal interactions should be facilitated by co-location of core team members. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Even though successful product development projects face greater challenges in coordinating large, dispersed cross-functional teams, historical barriers to communication continue to persist. Barriers can arise from organizational structures, incentive systems, geographical location, cultural differences, leadership styles and project management practices. Operating within these barriers is difficult for modern product development. Especially since the practice of concurrent or simultaneous engineering, employed to speed up the product development process, requires increased coordination [clark and Fujimoto 1991; Clausing 1989; Krishnan, Eppinger and Whitney This is because as firms continue to shrink development time through concurrent engineering, tasks must be overlapped more aggressively, requirin g much coordination between tasks.
