Print on Demand. This book is an examination of international relations and the events that propelled Europe into World War I. The author starts by examining the history and culture of Germany as it related to its rapid militarization. Germany's increasingly militant stance and belligerent foreign policy are juxtaposed with England's late entry into the conflict, despite its strongly worded denunciation of Germany's invasion of Belgium. The author probes the underlying motivations and events that led to the war, challenging the reader to reflect on what caused the breakdown of diplomacy and the failure of international law. By setting these events within the broader context of the human struggle for freedom and the balance of power, the author presents this work as significant to our understanding of how nations interact and the nature of international conflict. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Political Theory and History
Whether as regards the number of men engaged in it, or the destructive power of the weapons employed, or the variety and extent of the interests affected by it, the war which is now being waged in Europe is greater by far than any hitherto recorded in the annals of mankind. Its immediate cause was the murder of the Archduke of Austria at Serajevo. But this crime is in itself no explanation of its origin; and whatever may be its issues, they will not be concerned with the punishment of the deed of June the 28th. Its real cause lies deeper, and will be found, not in any single isolated event, but in a connected series of events, whose inner meaning has been revealed to usby the war itself, and by the circumstances that attended its actual outbreak.
