Print on Demand. This book introduces a novel method for estimating visitor use of developed recreation sites. The self-registration method uses data collected from visitor self-registration cards to establish relationships between visitor counts and traffic counts. These relationships can then be applied to season-long traffic count records to estimate season-long use. The book provides detailed instructions for selecting sites, sampling times, equipment, and administration of the self-registration system, as well as for visitor sampling, editing, coding, and keypunching of field data. It also includes computer programs for estimating visitor use from self-registration data for three different situations: sites with sample counts made during the year, sites with no sample counts made during the year but with sample counts made in previous years, and sites with no sample counts made at all. The book's insights on visitor use estimation will be of great value to recreation managers and researchers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Double-sampling methods have provided a good start in estimating visitor use of developed recreation sites, and the traffic counter version of double sampling is widely used now by the Forest Service.1 The basic idea in double sampling is simple. The relationship between visitor use and traffic counts (or some other predictor variable) is established from sample counts made at the same time for both use and traffic. This relationship is then applied to the season - long traffic count record to estimate season-long use.
