Print on Demand. This research-based text assists in understanding and estimating decay in old-growth Western Hemlock and Sitka Spruce on commercial forest land in southeast Alaska. The author thoroughly explores the relationship of external wound indicators and tree characteristics to both cubic-foot and board-foot decay percentages. The text begins by presenting the importance of decay in standing trees and the need for accurate decay estimations prior to felling. This book also includes historical research on forest diseases and decay in the region, which provides context for the author's original research. Through detailed analysis of tree dissections, the author determines which external wound indicators are the most reliable for assessing decay, ultimately developing equations to predict decay which are presented in easy-to-use tables. This book's findings are particularly useful for large-scale inventories and cruises and will aid foresters and timber cruisers who seek to improve the accuracy and efficiency of their decay estimations in old-growth Western Hemlock and Sitka Spruce stands. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
