Decimalizing the Foot and Ounce: a deep dive into 1920 hearings on standardizing US weights, measures, and coins.
Explore the origins of a proposed American decimal system built on the familiar foot and ounce. This volume presents the discussions, ideas, and practical concerns raised before the House committee as lawmakers considered how to align length, weight, and coinage with decimal divisions without discarding trusted customs.
Through the testimony of lawmakers and advocates, you’ll see how a decimal foot, tenths of an inch, and a new relationship between length and weight were argued to preserve everyday measures while enabling precise calculation. The material sheds light on debates over the metric system, the role of coins, and the practical challenges of changing long‑standing trading habits.
- The central proposal to standardize weights, measures, and coins using a decimal system anchored to the foot and ounce
- Arguments for keeping familiar American units while introducing decimal divisions
- Discussed implications for coins, trade, and everyday commerce
- Historical context on why some officials favored decimalization over metric adoption
Ideal for readers interested in American history, measurement policy, and the evolution of standards in commerce.
