Print on Demand. This book explores the principles behind the concept of work in physics and mechanics. Beginning with the fundamental premise that work involves both a unit of force and a unit of distance, the author illustrates how work is measured by a unit known as a "foot-pound", using examples from everyday activities such as raising a weight or exerting pressure against a surface. The book goes on to explain the concept of work in the context of machines like levers, wheels, pulleys, inclined planes, wedges, and screws. It also delves into concepts related to work in the context of energy, such as the principle of virtual velocities, the concept of a center of gravity, and the calculation of units of work in a rotating body. The book concludes by examining the application of work principles in various real-world scenarios, including the operation of steam engines and the use of the hydrostatic press. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Formerly, the science of mechanics was one of the last branches of applied mathematics to which a student was induced to turn his particular attention, but now the case is difl'erent. Since the wealth and power of nations de pended so much on the application of the sciences to the mechanical and industrial arts, a knowledge of practical mechanics becomes of paramount importance, not only to engineering students, but also to capitalists, statesmen, and merchants, many of whom are but little skilled m the higher departments of mathematics.
