Essential Chan Buddhism is the rare unearthing of an ancient and remarkable Chinese spiritual tradition that is still largely unknown in the West. Chan Master Guo Jun shares his beautifully rendered wisdom and sparkling insights from the heart and soul of Chan, which is related to but distinct from its close relation, Japanese Zen. Guo Jun gives us glimpses of his own arduous ascetic path and the ways Chan embodies not only Buddhism but Taoism and Confuianism. A book of timeless wisdom poetically presented, Essential Chan Buddhism is based on talks Guo Jun gave at a fourteen day retreat near Jakarta in 2010 and on subsequent conversations with his editor, Kenneth Wapner. It takes one of the world's great wisdom traditions into the twenty-first century.
