Essays on Partial Derangement of the Mind, by John Cheyne, explores the intersection of mental instability and religious belief in the 19th century. Cheyne delves into the manifestations of mental derangement as they are intertwined with, and sometimes seemingly caused by, religious fervor and conviction. This work offers a historical perspective on the understanding and treatment of mental health, specifically focusing on the challenges in distinguishing genuine spiritual experience from pathological delusion.

Originally published in 1843, this book provides valuable insights for those interested in the history of psychiatry, the psychology of religion, and the complex relationship between faith and reason. Cheyne's essays shed light on the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches of his time, making this a compelling read for scholars and anyone curious about the evolution of mental health care.
