Bordley (1727-1804) was a native of Maryland, and a lawyer by profession. He was appointed judge of the Provincial Court in Baltimore in 1766 following year as judge British Admiralty Court. In 1793 he established the first agricultural society of the United States in Philadelphia. From his wife s side, he inherited half of Wye Island, 1600 acres, at the mouth of the Wye River on Maryland s Eastern Shore. Bordley worked a large farm there, the plates showing the equipment and buildings used. While Bordley can be categorized as a gentlemen farmer, he understood the sciences behind revolutionized farming that was being practiced in England to the extent that he was invited to speak before the British Board of Agriculture in 1797 on The Nature and Principles of Vegetation. His experiments on farming are well documented in this influential work. Seller Inventory # RAREA1799FOQX
