In a half calf prize binding, with the gilt crest of Liverpool College to the front board and a decorative gilt spine. Top edge gilt. Binding signed by Edward Howell. Bookplate to front paste down. Prize bookplate to front free end paper, dated 1922. This is a collection of Lamb"s essays that he wrote under the pseudonym Elia for London Magazine. In these essays, Lamb's prose style is used to create the distinctive persona of Elia. The essays are playful and whimsical, conjuring up scenes from childhood and later life, and sometimes old acquaintances, with humour and pathos. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for this work - his Essays of Elia - and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764 1847). In a half calf binding. Externally in excellent condition with minimal rubbing. Colour is good and gilt is bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with some spotting to the fore edge and only a little offsetting to the free end papers. Near Fine.
