He is best known for his works of travel writing and topography, as well as for being one of the first users of the term, 'Picturesque'. He had a keen interest in aesthetics, and outdoor scenery. This set comprises of: 'An Essay on Prints', the fifth edition. One of Gilpin's most renowned and influential works, in which he discusses his principles of aesthetics and defines the picturesque. With one page of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. 'Observations on the Western Parts of England, Relative Chiefly to Picturesque Beauty; To Which are Added, A Few Remarks on the Picturesque Beauties of the Isle of Wight', the second edition. One of Gilpin's popular travel works. With eighteen full-page plates. With one page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Collated complete. 'Remarks on Forest Scenery, and other Woodland Views, Relative Chiefly to Picturesque Beauty', the third edition. Volume two only, of the original two volumes. Illustrated with scenes of New Forest in Hampshire. With fourteen full-page plates and a folding map. Collated complete. 'Observations on Several Parts of the Counties of Cambridge, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex. Also on Several Parts of North Wales; Relative Chiefly to Picturesque Beauty, in Two Tours, The Former Made in the Year 1769. The Latter in the Year 1773', the first edition. Published by Gilpin's trustees, for the benefit of his school at Boldre, where Gilpin worked. With nineteen full-page plates. Collated complete. Each volume has a bookplate for one, 'William Charles Smith', to the front paste-down. Uniformly bound in full calf. Externally, very smart with some rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Spines are darkened. Some loss to the leather of the front board and lower spine of the 'Norfolk Tour'. The rear joint of, 'Western parts of England', is starting but still firm. The lower rear joint of, 'Forest Scenery', is cracked but firm. The rear hinges of, 'An Essay on Prints', 'Norfolk Tour', and, 'Western Parts of England', are starting but still very firm. Front hinge of, 'Norfolk Tour', is strained but firm. Bookplate to the front paste-downs of each volume. Light offsetting to the edges of the free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise generally bright and clean with light spotting throughout. Offsetting surrounding the plates in the illustrated volumes. Closed tear of about one inch to the folding map on page 51 of, 'Forest Scenery'. Pencil annotations to page 60 of 'Forest Scenery'. The front blank of, 'Forest Scenery', is loosening Very Good.
