Joints a tad weak, and starting in some places. Small contemporary newspaper clipping affixed to front pastedown (a testimonial to Malthus). Half-title present in volume one only. The first two-volume edition, containing fresh corrections and corrections to the previous editions. The appendix contains a response to critics, intended "to correct some misrepresentations which have gone abroad respecting two or three of the most important pints of the Essay . ." A vital influence on Darwin's formulation of natural selection, Malthus's Essay revealed that population growth is checked by the limitations of food supply, resulting in misery, in the form of disease and famine, suffered by the poorest of the population.
