Gelucire, que compreende uma mistura de glic�ridos puros (mono, di e triglic�ridos de �cidos gordos saturados), misturas de glic�ridos e �steres de �cidos gordos de polietilenoglic�is (�steres de �cidos gordos mono e di) em v�rias propor��es ou �steres de polietilenoglicol (PEG) puros sem a presen�a de glic�ridos, como no caso do Gelucire 55/18. Estes s�o materiais lip�dicos inertes feitos � medida, derivados de �leos e gorduras naturais hidrogenados de qualidade alimentar. Geralmente, s�o sintetizados por uma rea��o de alco�lise em que o �leo de coco, de palma ou de palmiste � hidrolisado e os �cidos gordos s�o removidos por destila��o fraccionada. Estes �cidos gordos s�o ent�o esterificados com PEG sob uma atmosfera de azoto. Para al�m da alco�lise, pode tamb�m ser fabricado por esterifica��o direta de �cidos gordos com glicerol e PEG. Os gelucires s�o excipientes com car�cter anfif�lico. O car�cter anfif�lico da base � atribu�do � longa cadeia de hidrocarbonetos e �s mol�culas de �lcool que tornam estas bases adequadas como transportadores lip�dicos para f�rmacos hidrof�licos e lipof�licos. Estas bases foram desenvolvidas para fundir dentro de gamas especificadas e para ter caracter�sticas pr�-determinadas de solubilidade em gordura ou de dispers�o em �gua.
