I began planning this book in 2005, but it truly formed in the field: muddy riverbanks, slippery intertidal rocks, pre dawn boats with fishermen, then the quiet discipline of laboratories and meeting rooms. The Environmental Psychology of Mussel Watch grows from Malaysian coastal experience, where Mussel Watch began as a technical programme and gradually revealed a deeper human story about observation, care, memory, behaviour, and responsibility. Scientifically, mussels are sedentary and widespread, able to integrate contaminants over time and quietly record the chemical history of coastal waters. Yet the work is never only about metals and trends. It is also about the scientists who interpret evidence, the communities who depend on the shore, the policymakers who decide what to do, and the students who will inherit both coastlines and consequences. This book sits at the intersection of ecology, ecotoxicology, psychology, education, and governance, using mussels as biological sentinels and narrative anchors. Across chapters, photos and reflections show how evidence becomes stewardship and policy for students, communities, leaders. For anyone who believes care can be taught.
