From the Author
This book introduces the systems used to control the thermal and luminous environment in buildings. Beginning with an introduction to the basic physical principles (heat transfer and photometry), human response (thermal and visual comfort), and design response to site and climate, both passive systems (solar heating, cooling, and daylighting) and mechanical systems (HVAC and electric lighting) are covered. Quantitative methods are covered with an emphasis on rules-of-thumb and simplified worksheet calculations. Throughout the text, the relationship of the concepts and calculation to the design of both large- and small-scale buildings is emphasized. Features include 24 worked example problems, 47 case study buildings, 170 design guidelines, 250 end-of-chapter study questions, end-of-chapter summaries of terms, 266 bibliographic citations, 640 freehand illustrations by the author, design data for 16 U.S. climatic regions, performance data for 56 passive heating systems, sundials and sunpath diagrams for U.S. latitudes, and 8 reproducible blank worksheets. The author is a registered architect and Professor of Architecture at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. As an author of four previous books, he has conducted numerous professional workshops. He has an extensive research and international publication record in the fields of structures and energy-efficient design. In 1989, he was a senior Fulbright fellow to the Soviet Union lecturing at the Moscow Architectural Institute.
