It is the first time that the whole range of every day environments has been treated in a single volume concerned with the evaluation of human performance. Much of the needed information can be found only in widely scattered technical publications, some of which are concerned more with human survival then with human performance. This book is practical and non-technical and the material herein is thoroughly documented and well illustrated. In summarizing and interpreting recent research, the author explains the principles which underlie the experimental findings. Introductory chapters which describe how the brain performs, and the techniques of experimentation, precede 21 chapters, each discussing and environmental stress and beginning with a statement of the practical problems. These are followed by a description of the main experimental results and what they mean. A section on the prevention and reduction of the effects of the environmental stress concludes each chapter.
