Print on Demand. This book examines the history and causes of population growth, poverty, and poor laws, arguing that they are the most vital questions in public economy, demanding immediate consideration by the legislature. The author disputes common doctrines on population, such as the belief that poverty is due to inadequate sustenance rather than insufficient means to purchase it, and delves into the relationship between poverty and population increase. Written during a time when these issues were reaching a fever pitch in England and Ireland, this book sought to alleviate distress amongst the laboring classes and prevent future economic crises. The author believed the solution was to stimulate economic growth and prevent population increase. The principles outlined in this book laid the foundation for the study of political economy and the development of social reform policies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A N Author, in soliciting attention to a work on the subject Of Population, and the means Of removing distress amongst a great body Of the people, runs little risk Of deceiving him self in respect to the intrinsic importance of his theme. By common consent amongst all classes Of statesmen, the poor laws. Both in England and Ireland, and every inquiry relating to the correction Of indigence, are pronounced to be the most vital questions in public economy, de manding the earliest, closest, and most devoted consideration of the legislature And, indeed, if all the bearings Of these questions be traced, this estimation Of their paramount importance will neither be found disproportioned to real exigencies, nor to spring exclusively from that direction of public discussion towards popular subjects, which some individuals, who, in the texture Of their minds, are more of the past age than the present, occasionally urge.
