For centuries spiritual seekers have asked the profound question:
Who am I?
This question appears in the teachings of sages, mystics, and philosophers throughout history. In the Advaita tradition of India, it was used by teachers such as Ramana Maharshi as a method of self-inquiry. In Zen Buddhism, similar questions were used as koans to break through the limitations of conceptual thinking.
The purpose of such inquiries has always been the same: to discover the truth of one’s own nature directly.
Yet for most people this discovery has traditionally required years of meditation and contemplation. The mind is filled with ideas, beliefs, memories, and emotional identifications about who we are. In the late 1960s, spiritual teacher Charles Berner made an important discovery that dramatically accelerated this ancient process.
After years of studying communication between individuals, Berner observed something simple but powerful: many of the thoughts and impressions that fill the mind remain there because they have never been fully expressed and understood.
When something is clearly communicated and received by another person, it often dissolves from the mind.
From this observation Berner developed a method that combined self-inquiry with structured communication between two individuals.
This method became known as the Enlightenment Technique, the core practice used in retreats called Enlightenment Intensives.
Since the first Enlightenment Intensive was held in 1968, thousands of people around the world have used this technique to investigate the fundamental questions of human existence:
