The recent increase in immigration patterns in the United States has meant an increase in the number of children entering American schools whose first language is not English. Some reports indicate that as many as one in four students come from families where the language spoken in the home is not English. Abul Pitre is professor and chair of the Department of Africana Studies at San Francisco State University. He teaches courses such as The Life and Thought of Elijah Muhammad, Hip Hop Workshop, Black Religion, Critical Black Pedagogy, and a wide range of subjects -- including education,?leadership, critical pedagogy, and Nation of Islam Studies.? Pitre has authored, edited, and co-edited 29 books, including several with Rowman & Littlefield.? He is best known for The Educational Philosophy of Elijah Muhammad and A Critical Black Pedagogy Reader: The Brothers Speak. He was on a panel with Dr. Cornel West where he discussed his most recent book, Liberation Pedagogy: Elijah Muhammad and the Art of Soul Crafting.
Alice Duhon Ross is a core faculty for the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Walden University. Current research focus is multicultural, international, peace education. She is a career educator with over thirty years of teaching in higher education and is Nationally Board-Certified Counselor and National Board-Certified School Counselor. Dr. Judith Blakely is academic coordinator at Walden University and serves a vital role in maximizing student achievement by incorporating leadership, advocacy, and collaboration. Jeffrey S.
