Hardback. Slight wear and tear to D/J. Reproduced in Facsimile from authentic examples of plate and tables of date-letters and other hall-marks used in the Assay Offices of the United Kingdom. Originally published in 1904 but revised and enlarged with 2,00 additional entries in 1921, this historical comendium of the guild and individual plate workers' hallmarks on gold and silver plate made in England, Scotland and ireland from ca. 1320 to ca. 1920 is the only study in this area to have been made with such thoroughness and accuracy. The chief value of this monumental volume, and the main reason for its enduring reputation, is its hundreds of pages of charts. Each of the thousand marks in the two pictorial charts is reproduced in accurate facsimile taken from an authentic piece of plate. Supplementing the charts are historical essays on each of the main geographical areas in which plate working achieved importance - all the major cities (Londong, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dublin) and provincial towns as well as dozens of the minor guilds. Fully documented (even the nature of the item upon which each mark was found is noted, as is its location and the name of its owner), and as complete as research could make it, this book is a must for anyone who hase cause or occasion to determine the dates of English, Scotch or Irish plate, to identify marks or makers, or to authenticate doubtful or uncertain pieces. In all, it depicts over 13,000 different marks and represents a lifetime of work that has never been approached for range and reliability of coverage. Unaltered, unabridged republication of enlarged 2nd edition. Authors prefaces, 2 indices, 8 illustrations. 768 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).…
