Add to basketThis 512-page offering in G+ condition is The English Counties, Illustrated, Edited by C.E.M. Joad, published by Odhams Press Limited, Long Acre and London, in 1949. Not an ex-library copy, there is yellowish staining of paste down and loose end pages front and back, some yellowing of the pages, and webbing is visible down the length of where the back cover piece meets the spine. There is also some fading/discoloration on parts of the front cover piece, and a Christmas gift message in black ink at the top portion of the front loose end page. This fascinating portrait of English geography/geology/culture/economic conditions, country-wide, following WWII, is peppered with nearly 400 photographs, maps, and drawings of England( both in cities and towns, and surrounding countryside). The volume is, in the author's words "a book about the people and the counties of England.it touches on the ways of life, the industries, the occupations, and the pleasures of the men and women who dwell therein". It presents detailed, current descriptions of the Southern, Eastern, Western, Midland, and Northern Counties, offering also a Table of Contents and Index. Lindley Searle, E. Wigglesworth, W. Savage, and F.D. Blake deserve mention for the prolific number of Illustrations mentioned earlier. Thank you!
