Neuware - In 'The Engineers & the Price System,' Thorstein Veblen examines the intricate relationship between engineering principles and economic structures, advocating for a meritocratic industrial society driven by technical expertise rather than profit motives. Through a critical lens, Veblen employs his characteristic satirical prose, engaging the reader in a discourse about the inefficiencies of the capitalist price system, which he argues stifles innovation and progress. His exploration intertwines economic theory with social critique, positioning the engineer as an unsung hero in the fight against the limitations imposed by market capitalism. Thorstein Veblen, a prominent economist and sociologist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was disillusioned by the materialism and conspicuous consumption of his time--ideas that pervade his work. Veblen's background in both economics and philosophy informed his analysis and critique of social norms. His engagement with functionalism and his vision of a society led by engineers reflect his belief in the potential for technology to enhance societal welfare. 'The Engineers & the Price System' is essential reading for those interested in economic theory, technological innovation, and social critique. Veblen's insightful examination encourages readers to rethink the implications of market-driven economies and to appreciate the pivotal role of engineers in shaping a sustainable future.…
