Softcover, 282 pages. Marbled end pages. Page edges gilt. Usual shelf wear to corners and edges of cover, top 1.5" inches of spine at right edge are torn. There are remnants of original wallet-style binding: clasp is missing, on front cover a 3" long imprint is visible with small incisions on each end where clasp was likely inserted into cover; and pocket between back cover and back end page is no longer in tact. The last pages were left blank and are filled with pen and ink equations and notes, and an occasional drawing/scribble. A flip through the book reveals approximately six pages where someone has made notes alongside the text. Overall good condition, binding is sound. Page following title page states "To the honorable John V. Mason, secretary of the Navy, U.S.A., as an humble tribute of respect for his personal virtues and public services, This Edition is Inscribed by the author. Washington, September, 1847".
