Engineering Limnology describes the interface between biological limnology and engineering management. It represents a first attempt to introduce, in a quantitative manner, ideas of water quality to engineers whose sole concern has traditionally been with water quantity. This book is primarily a synthesis of the work mathematicians, biologists, chemists, hydrodynamicists and other specialists over the past fifteen years. Rather than being merely descriptive, the book places emphasis throughout on the quantification, mainly by means of models, of the processes involved. The book is in four parts, each consisting of one or more chapters. Part 1 introduces the basic terms and concepts. Part 2 discusses the physical and dynamical aspects of lakes and reservoirs, dealing with temperature and other energy effects and with hydrodynamics. Biological and chemical characteristics and interactions are examined in Part 3, with a discussion of disolved oxygen and nutrients, including an analysis of cultural eutrophication. Part 4, on design and management, brings together the ideas examined in the earlier parts of the book and discusses them in terms of models, techniques and special considerations relating to reservoir management. Examples of scientific assessment and engineering measurement are included from every part of the world and the concept of model transferability recurs throughout the text.
