Recounts the end of British colonialism and the political events leading to the independence of India, Palestine, Malaya, Iran, Egypt, Aden, Cyprus, Gold Coast, Kenya, and Rhodesia
Synopsis: The British Empire was one of the last of the world empires and its decline and fall took place within a single generation, effectively beginning with Indian independence in 1947 and ending with the creation of Zimbabwe in 1980. Save in Hong Kong, Gibraltar and a few islands, the colonial governor became all but extinct. This book is a narrative of events in Asia (India, Pakistan and Malaya), the Middle East and Africa (the Gold Coast, Kenya and Rhodesia) from Pax Britannica to independence. In addition to memoirs and histories, the book calls upon the living memories of former colonial secretaries, ministers, senior officials, politicians and national leaders. The author also assesses the success of British governments in judging the precise moment of the inevitable. Brian Lapping is also author of "Apartheid".
