When a high-risk patient deteriorates during anesthesia, knowing what to do matters. Understanding why it is happening matters just as much.
Encyclopedia of High-Risk Anesthesia 2026–2027 Edition, Volume 1 provides a comprehensive, clinically focused foundation for understanding perioperative risk, complex patient physiology, anesthetic decision-making, and crisis recognition.
Designed for anesthesia professionals, residents, fellows, and advanced healthcare learners, this reference goes beyond memorized protocols to explain the clinical reasoning behind difficult decisions.
INSIDE THIS VOLUME, YOU WILL EXPLORE:
-
High-Risk Patient Assessment: Physiological reserve, functional capacity, frailty, risk classification, and preoperative evaluation.
-
Clinical Pharmacology: Anesthetic drug classes, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug interactions, and considerations in organ dysfunction.
-
Preoperative Optimization: Anemia, cardiovascular risk, diabetes, sleep-disordered breathing, nutrition, medication management, and multidisciplinary planning.
-
Advanced Patient Monitoring: Pulse oximetry, capnography, hemodynamics, ultrasound, neuromuscular monitoring, and interpretation of monitoring limitations.
-
Complex Airway Management: Difficult airway assessment, oxygenation principles, backup planning, physiologically difficult airways, and safe extubation.
-
Cardiac Anesthesia and Risk: Coronary disease, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, implanted cardiac devices, and cardiovascular management principles.
-
Crisis Recognition and Clinical Reasoning: Identifying deterioration, interpreting physiological changes, coordinating teams, and understanding rescue priorities.
A STRUCTURED REFERENCE FOR SERIOUS CLINICAL LEARNING
Volume 1 contains Chapters 1–8 of a 25-chapter, four-volume reference series. Each chapter includes explanatory discussions, clinical learning features, a glossary, and review questions designed to strengthen understanding.
Rather than relying on potentially outdated drug-dosing tables, this volume emphasizes physiological principles, risk assessment, clinical judgment, and the importance of current institutional protocols.
WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK?
Anesthesiology residents and fellows, practicing anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologist assistants, critical care physicians, perioperative clinicians, pharmacists, and medical students.
Build a stronger foundation for understanding complex anesthesia cases, anticipating perioperative complications, and making informed clinical decisions.
Begin with Volume 1 of the Encyclopedia of High-Risk Anesthesia.
