About this title

A reference on the use and abuse of legal and illegal drugs. It covers: the history of drug and alcohol use; the international drug trade; drug use in the treatment of disease; physical and psychological effects of drug and alcohol use; and individual drugs.

From Booklist:

This four-volume set contains 725 signed articles on all aspects, physiological and sociological, of legal and illegal drug and alcohol use and abuse worldwide. Among the drugs covered are tobacco, sleeping pills, inhalants, and morning glory seeds. According to its editor, a clinical professor of psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, this set is a "comprehensive source of information for nonspecialists." It contains material for high-school and college students and adults on the history of the use of various substances, specific substances and their chemical properties, treatment programs and activist groups, and the societal impact of such phenomena as addicted babies, drugs in the workplace, substance abuse and AIDS, and drunken driving. Also covered are advertising and its effects on drug and alcohol consumption and drug and alcohol use among specific ethnic groups (Chinese, Jews) and in other countries (Britain, Asia). Specific coverage of African Americans is in the misleadingly titled entry Ethnic Issues and Cultural Relevance in Treatment. Medical aspects, such as Delirium Tremens, and legal issues, such as Minimum Age Drinking Laws, are discussed. Various prevention programs are surveyed, as are research results. Slang and Jargon contains several pages of words and definitions.

Volumes 1^-3 contain the alphabetically arranged articles. The ones on specific substances, such as Benzodiazepines, are technical, but most entries are accessible to the layperson. Bibliographies of scholarly sources accompany every article. Most of the works cited were published in the 1980s and 1990s, with some 1995 copyrights. Longer articles, such as Treatment (60 pages) and Alcohol (19 pages), are divided into subtopics with each section signed by its author and containing its own bibliography. See also references are found at the end of articles, and words in small-capital letters within entries also refer the reader to other articles. Volume 1 contains lists of articles with their authors and of the authors with their affiliations. Contributors are social scientists, pharmacologists, physicians, chemists, and experts on the criminal justice system. The last volume contains five appendixes, including directories of poison control centers by state, federal and state drug resources, state and city treatment and prevention programs, a time line of events in U.S. drug-control operations, and the DEA schedule of controlled substances. This volume concludes with the set's index that indicates the main entry for a topic by page numbers in boldface type.

This encyclopedia contains material on the topics students are interested in researching and covers many aspects of those subjects. Facts On File's Encyclopedia of Alcoholism (2d ed., 1991) and Encyclopedia of Drug Abuse ( 2d ed., 1991) have briefer entries on many of the same topics written for a popular audience. The Facts On File books do not cover tobacco and don't have as much directory-type information. High-school, public, and academic libraries will find the Encyclopedia of Drugs and Alcohol heavily used by their patrons for both research and personal information.
