From the Back Cover
"This is an exceedingly well-timed update of an exceptionally useful book, which can serve both as a clear and concise manual to employment law and practice for legal and human resources practitioners, advice agencies, and professional students in law and business."
James Ressel, Solicitor and Senior Lecturer in Law, Law Division, School of Social Sciences, University of Northampton.
"an extremely thorough review of the principles of the system underlying employment law ...the use of figures and précis boxes containing the key points of legal cases which have set precedents, along with the regular clear reference to both specific clauses in the legislation and cases in the text itself make this a very useful book. "
Joan Hewlett, Senior Lecturer, HRM, Anglia Ruskin University
Focused on the needs of students studying employment law from an HRM or business background, Employment Law in Context introduces you to the law alongside an examination of the social, economic and political context in which it develops and the policy issues and practicalities for employers.
Exercises and case study exhibits are utilised throughout in order to give you confidence and practice in analysing the law in an HRM context, while a new colour design aids navigation. The text has been brought fully up to date to cover legal developments in what is a rapidly changing subject. In addition to detailed coverage of contract and dismissal law, the new edition covers:
- all strands of equality and discrimination law
- pay and working time legislation
- changes in maternity and parental rights
- transfers of undertakings
- health, safety and welfare
In order to aid a full understanding of the subject, each chapter follows a common framework containing the following:
- Learning objectives to focus reading
- Context section outlines how social, economic and political issues influence the law
- Legal framework clearly introduces relevant legal principles
- Policies and practices looks at the application of the law
- Case study exhibits and exercises invite you to apply the legal provisions in everyday management situations
Brian Willey is a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Business and Law at Kingston University. He is involved in the delivery of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development employment law programmes.
