[Literature] FIRST THOMSON EDITION, deluxe issue (descibed by the bibliographer as 'cloth elegant' issue). Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[2] xviii; 437 [1]. With forty in-text pen and ink illustrations by Thomson, including a tissue-guarded frontispiece. Publisher's red cloth, with lavish gilt decoration and titles to upper board and spine. All edges gilt. Pictorial yellow 'Peacock' design endpapers. Contents clean, some spotting to prelims, no inscriptions, covers bright with minimal rubbing. First published in December 1815, 'Emma' was the last book published before the author's death. The novel follows Miss Austen's most brazen and self-confident heroine, Emma Woodhouse. This is the first appearance of Hugh Thomson's delightful illustrations for this Jane Austen classic. This is the publisher's deluxe binding elaborately blocked in gilt; a regular cloth binding was available simultaneously, featuring blind-stamped decoration to covers, without gilt edges, plain endpapers.
