Item description from seller

12mo (18.5cm). Publisher's green cloth with decorative title in gilt to spine; all edges gilt; 351,(1)pp + 20pp ads; three folding maps. Light rubbing to cloth; the two larger maps with neatly-mended short tears at gutter; a generally attractive, Very Good or better copy. Folding maps include a gatefold map of the United States; a large map titled "Associated Railways of Virginia and the Carolinas" (48cm x 61cm) and a map of Wisconsin (48cm x 40cm). A popular guide for British and Irish citizens considering emigration to the United States. In addition to general advice regarding life in America (wages of labor, cost of supplies and staples, livestock and agricultural practices, etc), there are specific chapters on the prospects for emigration in thirty-four U.S. states (essentially excluding all of the eastern states north of the Virginias). The inclusion of a folding map of Wisconsin may be attributed to the author's having settled there himself in 1855 - though at the time of publication he was serving as the U.S. Consul in Newcastle-on-Tyne. A contemporary reader (unidentified) has annotated a few of these chapters with their own notes regarding suitability - California: "Coast Bad. Interior fair;" Idaho: "Not doing;" Montana: simply, "No;" Indiana: "Southern Indiana would do," etc. The Emigrant's Friend was first published in 1880, with new editions appearing in successive years through 1883.
