[8], 375pp, [1]. With an engraved half-title and 93 engravings in the text. Bound by Charles Goodall of Leeds in early twentieth-century navy half-calf, buckram boards, tooled in gilt and blind. Rubbing to joints and edges, marking to boards, pen trials to recto and verso of engraved half-title, slight loss to lower corners of C2-3, browned throughout, occasional spots of dust-soiling. First printed in 1635, the aptly named Emblems, by English renaissance poet Francis Quarles (1592-1644), consists of divine and moral poetry, illustrated throughout with allegorical baroque designs, promoting the uncontroversial characteristics typically identified with good Christian living. The work, which proved the most successful Quarles produced, was dedicated to Edward Benlowes, who had provided inspiration in presenting the poet with copies of two highly esteemed seventeenth-century Jesuit continental emblem books; Pia Desideria (1624) and Typus Mundi (1627). Quarles produced a second poetic-emblem book, the Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man in 1638, and the two works were collected together in over 30 editions before 1800. ESTC T94282. Size: 12mo. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an early 17th-century emblem book, a genre that pairs illustrated symbols or objects with short poems to convey allegorical and devotional messages. The collection includes over 200 poems on themes ranging from morality and religion to the nature of God and man. The author, Francis Quarles, a contemporary of Shakespeare and John Milton, was known for his witty and often satirical verse. His emblems draw on a rich tradition of Christian symbolism, as well as classical mythology and Renaissance literature, to explore the complexities of human nature and the search for salvation. Quarles's work offers a unique window into the religious and cultural landscape of early modern England. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. An investigation into the role of the devil in life and how to conquer evil, this book presents a historical and literary study. Drawing from the works of 17th-century poet and emblematist Francis Quarles, the author explores the ways in which the devil manifests throughout life. Filled with visually-engaging emblems, this book posits that the seven deadly sins - wrath, sloth, pride, envy, gluttony, greed, and lust - are the devil's primary tools in his battle against man and that the only way to overcome the power of hell is through God and a strong belief in his grace.
