This is the last book of Romantic novelist Sophie Cottin (1770-1807). Cottin, who was unable to conceive children and whose husband died when she was in her twenties, was a follower of Rousseau and an advocate of his ideas relating to the traditional roles of women. She produced several novels, which were widely read and translated into several languages, of which this is the most famous. It is the story of a young woman who travels from Siberia to St. Petersburghto secure a pardon for her exiled father. Twelvemo. 196 + [6] pp. publisher's ads. First Mary Meeke translation. Several American editions preceded this publication Mary Meeke (1744/5?Ð1816?) produced more than thirty-four novels, many under the pseudonym of Gabrielli.
