All edges lightly red. Martin identified as author of the works on the Horse and the Dog. An "Advertisement" following the title-page of the third item says that it ". written to carry forward the plan announced in the volume of 'the Elephant,' . to complete those works which . furnish very complete details of the three quadrupeds (the Elephant, the Dog, and the Horse) who have been the great instruments furnished by Divine Providence to man, to enable him to "replenish the earth and subdue it;" and who, in various states of society, deserved to be regarded as his especial friends." The Advertisement identifies the author of the volume on the Elephant, which was originally published in the "Library of Entertaining Knowledge," as the Editor of the Weekly Volume. We have assumed that Charles Knight was both editor and publisher. Despite the order of appearance in this volume, the Dog volume appears to have been published before the Horse volume. Elephant volume identified as "A New Edition revised by the Author;" no statement of edition for the Horse and Dog volumes.
