Print on Demand. This book presents a comprehensive guide to French composition for advanced learners. It aims to strengthen readers’ abilities in translating connected English prose into real French, progressing from basic idioms (with every word not found in the French text clearly marked) to more challenging and authentic scenarios. The text is meticulously crafted to balance a focus on grammatical form, precision in terminology, and cultivation of stylistic fluency, thereby fostering a deep understanding of French language and culture. Complementing the translations are thought-provoking questions that help learners internalize structures and vocabulary. It also provides ample opportunities for oral practice, encourages spontaneous expression, and guides learners in developing their own style. Going beyond mere translation exercises, this book offers insights into the nuances and intricacies of the French language, with explanations of common pitfalls, differences in sentence structure, and cultural references. By immersing readers in a rich tapestry of authentic materials, it not only enhances their linguistic competence but also deepens their appreciation for the beauty and complexity of French literature and thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

If, then, the prose given for translation must be very carefully chosen, it is evident that suitable material can not always be found ready to hand. The most elementary of the school reading-books, when tried, turns out too difficult. The style of the daily and other current journals is still more so. It therefore becomes necessary to prepare a collection of pieces which will provide variety of style without extreme difficulty of idiom. To furnish such a collection is the aim of the present. Manual.
The work of selecting and adapting - and, in certain cases, composing - the pieces forming the collection has been per formed with much care, and has occupied a good part of the leisure time of several years. A considerable number of the exercises have been tested in High School and University classes, and those which were still too difficult have been simplified. But before the test of the English exercises was definitely fixed, every line of them, including the imitative exercises of Part I, was written in French, and accompanied by variants and remarks for subsequent use in the notes and vocabularies. It is hoped that by this means the English text has been so constituted that it can be rendered into real French; and that the assistance required by a painstaking student from the teacher or the text-book will not prove to be excessive.
