Foxing and browning confined to initial five and final five leaves and first foldout plate; otherwise clean and tight. A somewhat unprepossessing copy. First edition in English of this important translation. In an attempt to modernize the teaching of mathematics at Cambridge when they were undergraduates there in 1812, Babbage, Herschel, and Peacock founded the Analytical Society. Their translation of Lacroix's Traité, first published in French in 1802, was the main outcome of their project to introduce the more refined analytical methods and notation used on the continent.
