Hardback. Condition: Good. Ah, Elementary Training for Musicians (1969) by Paul Hindemith ?a book with the reassuring word ?elementary? in the title, which in musical terms usually means ?simple, provided you already have perfect pitch, three spare brains, and a suspiciously obedient sense of rhythm.? Hindemith was not the sort of composer to pat the learner gently on the head and say ?never mind, just feel the music.? No. This is training in the old serious sense: disciplined, practical, exacting, and faintly terrifying. It is a book for musicians who wish to stop merely playing notes and start understanding why those notes are behaving like that. Inside, the reader will find exercises in rhythm, melody, notation, ear training, and general musical thinking, all delivered with the brisk authority of someone who believes that musical competence is not a mood but a craft. It is ?elementary? in the same way that army basic training is ?basic?: technically accurate, but not necessarily relaxing. This 1969 Schott edition has that splendid mid-century seriousness about it: no glossy promises, no ?learn piano in a weekend,? no smiling child on the cover discovering jazz hands. Just proper musical groundwork, laid out for students, teachers, composers, and anyone else brave enough to admit that counting correctly is harder than it looks. Condition is Good , meaning it has survived the noble struggle between musicians and exercises. It may show some ordinary signs of age and use, but remains ready to instruct, correct, and possibly humble its next owner. A fine book for music students, theory enthusiasts, composers, teachers, and anyone who suspects that behind every beautiful performance lies a great deal of unglamorous counting. Paperback. Condition: Near Fine condition. Second Edition, Revised. London & New York / Valley Forge , PA: Schott & Co. / European American Music, 1974. Appears unread. Near Fine condition. Trade Paperback. 6" wide by 9" tall. A bright, shiny, clean, tight copy. The spine is square and flat with NO creases. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. This is a 1974 reprint of the 1949 Revised Second Edition. From the publisher: "This book offers a complete course in sight-reading, ear-training and notation, from the very beginnings to the most advanced stages." Profusely illustrated with musical examples. Bound in the original maroon and white pictorial wrappers. From the Preface: "This book seeks to provide exercises which -- if applied in the right way -- must infallibly supply such fundamental theoretical knowledge. It is by no means the first comprehensive attempt to discuss elementary material. It does not even pretend to present this material in an original form. Its content has been set forth and explained countless times before, and there are some excellent books on the subject in various languages. But in order to understand the best works in this field and to make the proper use of them, one must already be a fairly advanced musician. Such a musician will find in them a remarkably good survey of the basic material, but a beginner will hardly be in a position to digest the overwhelming mass and variety of facts and procedures, or to select what is useful for him. Moreover, the exercises given in such books (when any are given) are insufficient. There is, on the other hand, no lack of less comprehensive, more specialized works, full of exercises for the beginner. But here the difficulty is that those books that try to give general theoretical instruction are either antiquated, in opinion and approach, or insufficient for a professional's education; and in most cases their exercises seem to be made for the author's satisfaction and self-assertion rather than for the student's profit, or they are so dry that even the most docile user cannot see their relationship to living music. The book grew out of the demands of my classes in theory, and was written for the benefit of my students. Needless to say, then: all the examples have been tested thoroughly, and only those have been included that have proved their usefulness." . Second Edition, Revised. Softcover.
