Print on Demand. This book details the author's experiences teaching English in a country academy forty years ago as well as the same approach implemented in high schools, summer schools, and other institutions over the subsequent decades. The central premise is that a focus should be on refinement of language skills and the introduction of literary analysis from an early age. The author presents evidence that children can excel at these from a young age, in contrast to the then-current belief that they needed to reach a certain developmental stage to begin. This book's insights are invaluable for educators who wish both to refine their own teaching of the English language and to inspire their students with a passion for the subject. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

In these pages, teachers learn to prioritize how students use English daily—speaking, reading, and writing—while recognizing the enduring value of literature. The emphasis is on helping learners develop accurate, graceful language and apply it in real work, not just memorize rules. The material also discusses when and how to use technical grammar, and how to tailor instruction to different abilities without sacrificing depth.
- Strategies for clear and precise language use in recitations and written work
- Integration of literature with language study to build taste and comprehension
- Guidance on using notes and classroom materials to fit varied ability levels
- Practical notes on teaching history and responsibly incorporating classics
Ideal for teachers seeking a time‑tested, adaptable framework for English instruction, and for readers interested in the aims and methods of early language education in the grammar‑school years.
