Mann and first published in 1891, represents a landmark in the Victorian movement to transform domestic duties into a disciplined, scientific pursuit. This foundational text was crafted during a pivotal era of social reform, aiming to professionalize home management and provide a rigorous curriculum for the burgeoning field of domestic economy. As a primary resource for educators across the British Empire, the manual reflects the nineteenth-century drive to elevate the status of women's work through structured instruction and the application of chemical and mechanical principles to the household. The manual provides a meticulous, step-by-step guide to the complex "washing day" rituals of the late 1800s. It moves systematically through the treatment of various textiles-from sturdy linens and cottons to delicate woolens and silks-emphasizing the importance of water temperature, the specific properties of hard and soft water, and the judicious use of soaps, starches, and "blues." Beyond mere manual labor, the authors delve into the technical operation of contemporary apparatus, offering authoritative guidance on the use of heavy irons, mangles, and wringers.Calder and Mann's prose is characterized by its directness and pedagogical clarity, designed to equip teachers with a standardized method for instilling habits of cleanliness, economy, and efficiency in their students. By codifying traditional household wisdom into a formal academic subject, this work serves as a significant historical record of the professionalization of domesticity. It stands as a fascinating artifact of an age that sought to improve society by bringing the precision of the laboratory into the heart of the family home. The front and back endpapers are toned. Small amount of wear around the corners of the boards and spine.
