Print on Demand. This book takes an insightful look at the development and impact of English language instruction. It starts by discussing the history of formal language study in schools, and surveys the pedagogical methods that have been used to teach it from the very beginning. The author provides a wealth of sample lessons that teachers at all levels will find useful. Rather than defining technical terms for students to memorize, this book presents lessons that engage students with language through guided discovery. These lessons focus on language as a tool of communication rather than as a subject to be memorized and recited. The author also provides practical tips and suggestions for integrating language instruction into other areas of the curriculum, as well as ideas for teaching students who speak other languages. The lessons include language skills practice, interactive activities, and memorable poems and quotations. This book is a valuable resource for teachers who want to improve their language instruction, regardless of their subject or grade level. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The subject as here presented is divided into three parts, each part representing a year's work in this branch.
The method of development is inductive. N o definitions are given to be committed to memory by the children.
What children are interested in, and what they may easily be led to be interested in, determined the nature of most of the lessons here presented. Many of these lessons are suggestive, and in the hands of a good teacher may be enlarged or otherwise modified to suit the environment and development of the pupils.
