Siegbahn won a share of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1981 for his contribution to the development of high-resolution electron spectroscopy. The present paper is "a survey presented at XVIIIth Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale at Grenoble, France, September 15-19, 1975." From the library of Nobel Laureate Emilio Segrè (physics, 1959).
