Print on Demand. This book contributes a unique and thorough analysis of an electromagnetic wave's interaction with an anisotropic scattering medium, shedding light on a phenomenon of critical importance in understanding the wave's propagation through the Earth's ionosphere. It combines rigorous variational principles with abstract linear space theory to provide a concise treatment of the subject. The author demonstrates how to employ Schwinger's integral equation-variational technique to derive precise formulas for reflection and transmission matrix elements. These formulas serve as a highly accurate means of approximating the wave's scattered field without getting bogged down in the intricate details of the scattering process. The book concludes with a reciprocity theorem that underscores the significance of the formulas' symmetry properties, a concept of particular relevance to ionosphere research. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The use of variational principles for the formulation of prob lems in mathematical physics is. Of course, very old; one thinks of Hamilton's principle, the principle of least action. And the various kinds of minimum energy principles that have been employed to character ize a multitude of physical situations. The attractiveness of these principles is ascribable to a feature common to all of them. Which is that they afford an extremely concise description of the phenomena under investigation. Moreover. In a great many problems the variational prin~ ciples lead very naturally to practical methods of estimating numerically the quantities it is desired to calculate.
