Print on Demand. This book describes moisture, temperature, and soluble salt content in soil, measured using electrical instruments. The author explains this electrical method in detail, describing the design and use of a soil hygrometer, electrolytic bridge, and temperature coils. Electrodes, temperature cells, splices, and insulation are also covered. The text provides guidelines for using the instruments to determine moisture and temperature in the field, including considerations for the composition of the soil. The technique is framed within a discussion of the importance of soil conditions in agriculture, particularly in irrigation and greenhouse management. Electrical instruments offer a significant advance over previous methods of soil investigation because they are less labor-intensive, less prone to error, and can be used to efficiently monitor the soil conditions that are necessary for healthy plant growth. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

The determination of the water content of soils in place by means of the variation in the electrical resistance was first investigated by Prof. Milton Whitney in 1887. He first attacked the problem by meas urin g the variation in the internal resistance of an earth battery, con sisting of alternate copper and zinc plates buried in the soil. This method was found not to be satisfactory on account of the polarization of the plates. Measurements of the resistance between large copper plates buried at' the desired depth were next made with a direct cur rent, but polarization again interfered seriously. The Kohlrausch bridge method, employing alternating currents, was finally successfully used, and various forms of electrodes were tested, difficulty being experienced at that time in maintaining good contact between the electrodes and the soil.
