Print on Demand. This book delves into the intriguing world of the electric arc, a subject explored since its accidental discovery in the early 19th century. Considered a fascinating phenomenon in its own right, the electric arc has also played a crucial role in the development of technologies such as lighting and communication. The author traces the historical journey of research on the electric arc, narrating the experiments and debates that have shaped our understanding of this phenomenon. Through this exploration, the book examines the nature of the electric arc, its behavior under various conditions, and the theories proposed to explain its characteristics. The discussion encompasses the arc's unique properties, including its resistance, voltage-current relationship, and the presence of counter electromotive force. By examining the arc's behavior in detail, the book provides valuable insights into the fundamental principles governing its operation and its potential applications in various technological fields. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

It is much easier to distinguish between the arc and the continuous discharge in a vacuum tube where the current is small and the large, such as that shown in a Geissler or Crookes tube, which has also been called by some a spark. The current in this case is much smaller than with the arc, and the potential difference is very much higher. Moreover with the arc the potential differ ence between the cathode, as the negative terminal is called, and the layer of gas in its immediate neighborhood is small, while with the glow discharge it is large. With the former it may be as low as 5 or 6 volts, while with the latter it must be as high as 300 volts.
