Nobody hands you a manual the day you become the one who handles it. You get a phone call, a corridor, a clipboard, and a series of consequential decisions made on almost no sleep — while a system nobody has ever explained to you moves at its own speed around your parent.
This is that manual.
Not a memoir. Not 700 pages of reference you will never read at 2 a.m. A short, practical, plainly written guide to the first days, the first weeks, and the years that follow — organized so you can open it at the page that names your exact situation, do what it says, and close it again.
Inside, you will learn:
- The four words that decide who pays for everything that happens next — and why the federal notice that used to explain this to families was redesigned in 2026 and no longer does
- How to stop a discharge you believe is unsafe — the free appeal, the one deadline that matters, and the exact words to use
- Why "Medicare covers 100 days of rehab" is wrong, what the real structure is, and how to see the cliff coming
- The one sentence that explains the entire American long-term care system — and the four payers that exist once you understand it
- What never to sign, and why signing a facility agreement in your own name can make you personally liable
- The money almost nobody claims — programs that pay Medicare premiums, deductibles and drug costs, sitting unclaimed by millions of eligible people
- Medicaid without the myths — the five-year lookback, spend-down done properly, spousal protections, and what really happens to the house
- How to talk to a parent who says no — six different reasons for that "no," and what actually works on each
- The conversation about the car, and how to have it without losing the relationship
- How to get paid for the care you are already giving
- How things differ across the 50 states, with a state-by-state directory of exactly where to look
Written for the reader who has no money to spare. Every recommendation in this book is tagged Free, Medicaid, or Private-pay — and the free option is always listed first. Most books in this field quietly assume you can hire private nurses. This one assumes you cannot.
Built to be raided, not read. Short chapters. Word-for-word scripts, each with a branch for when your parent or the case manager does not cooperate. Printable checklists reproduced in full. A one-page emergency plan on the first spread, so you get something useful in sixty seconds.
And one chapter, near the end, on the things nobody prints — the resentment, the guilt, the wish that it were over, the parent who was never kind to you. You are not the only one. Almost no one says it out loud.
You did not choose this and you were not trained for it. This book will not make it easy. It will make you competent, and competence is what your parent actually needs from you now.
