Assembly programming is more than just a mandatory exercise during training as a developer. Learn how to work out the fastest loop in the code and use the RISC-V command set.
In the first part, this book provides an overview of the basics, about processors, the tools needed and, of course, assemblers. General knowledge of programming is sufficient, prior knowledge of assembler or specific high languages such as C is not necessary.
We use the open processor standard RISC-V, which was also specifically developed for research and teaching. This makes things easier for everyone, because the core instruction set we present here includes less than 50 instructions. Even better: those who learn RISC-V learn for life, because the instruction set is "frozen" and does not change anymore.
For those who want to learn specifically RISC-V assembly programming, we go through the structure of the processor in the middle part, with a focus on the software. We introduce the individual commands, warn of pitfalls and reveal tricks. The weak points of the standard are illuminated and the use of AI as an aid is discussed. As an open, free standard, RISC-V is also increasingly used for hobby and student projects where the compiler is poorly or not adapted to the hardware if there is one at all.
The last part shows that this book also emerged out of sheer enthusiasm for assemblers. Anyone who thieves happy about every saved byte will love it.
