From the Publisher
ADDED COVERAGE: A critical theory perspective on power and politics has been added to Chapter 7. A new section on enabling bureaucracies in Chapter 4 illustrates bureaucracies that work and have positive outcomes. An updated and reorganized Chapter 5 on the individual and motivation helps students understand proven strategies for motivating teachers and students and includes an original model of teacher and collective efficacy and its impact on student learning.
CASE STUDIES: Each chapter now ends with an administrative case study that applies theory and research to practice. Each case illustrates a real contemporary problem.
LATEST RESEARCH: More than 200 studies and analyses have been added to bring the most current theory and research to bear on the problems of practice.
COMPREHENSIVE: This is the most comprehensive review of theory and research in educational administration available. It provides a thorough analysis of organizational politics, describes a number of specific ways to measure the climate of schools, and presents the latest conceptual analyses and research findings on school effectiveness.
SYSTEMS APPROACH: The text uses a social systems approach to synthesize the four basic elements of schools (structure, culture, the individual, and politics) as well as the key processes of administration (decision making, leadership, and communication).
THEORY TO PRACTICE: Each chapter begins with a theoretical analysis of some critical aspect of administration, examines the empirical research on the subject, and concludes with practical applications.
SHARED DECISION MAKING: A simplified model of shared decision making guides principals into deciding the most appropriate times and ways to involve teachers in decision making.
COMPING GUIDELINE: First-quality text, a 'known quantity' that Educational Administration professors will want to see.
BOOK'S POSITION: The most comprehensive synthesis available of theory and research in organizational behavior as it applies to the practice of Educational Administration.
