ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The life, work (and death) of an extraordinary woman. A portrait of the twentieth century that informs current debates about identity.
Edith Stein's complicated personal journey took her from Judaism to agnosticism, philosophy and Catholicism, and ended in a Nazi concentration camp.
Born in Poland in 1891, Edith Stein was the first German woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy; a close confidante of Edmund Husserl, the father of Phenomenology; and an early feminist. In 1921, she became interested in mysticism and converted to Catholicism, joining the Carmelite Order as Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Unable to emigrate before the Second World War broke out, she was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz, where she died in the gas chamber. In 1998, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
In this carefully researched book, Irene Chikiar Bauer delves into Stein's autobiographical writings, philosophical and religious texts, and extensive correspondence to shed light on her circumstances and the existential questions that consumed her. The result is a biography that connects Stein's life and work with the tumultuous era in which she lived and the causes she embraced with fervor and conviction. The issues it examines resonate with the present and current debates about identity.
