Commodore Robert Stanley Bates has led distinguished careers as an officer in the Coast Guard and the U.S. Merchant Marine over a period of sixty years. In 2004, Bates was the expedition leader to the suspected site of Eden-Atlantis off the coast of Cyprus, and in 2006 he was the consultant to the History Channel for the second expedition. His 26-year Coast Guard career included service on the icebreaker USCGC Eastwind during which he participated in bottom-mapping of uncharted Antarctic bays. Bates has also served as captain both for the University of Rhode Island Research Vessel Endeavor and for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute s Research Vessel Oceanus for numerous other sub-sea projects. He was also captain of the survey vessel USNS Harkness for bottom-mapping in the Persian Gulf.
