This work seeks to explain how human behaviour, thoughts, beliefs, values and feelings have contributed to environmental crises and how contributions from within psychology could aid the understanding and resolution of our environmental problems. The author examines social psychology, psychoanalysis, behaviourism, cognitive, and gestalt/transperal psychology and applies these theories to a selected environmental problem.
Review: "Intelligent, Insightful, Imperative." - Alan Durning Northwest Environmental Watch; "Winter's book addresses a topic that is crucially important to the future of humanity, and does it with a uniquely creative and integrative approach. She makes an impressive contribution by showing how many of the key theories and concepts of introductory psychology can be tied directly to the issue of environmental sustainability. She writes clearly and readably, with a delightfully warm and personal style that will draw readers into the topics of her concern. She has given voice to key environmental issues that have ultimate importance for all human beings, yet are usually ignored by most of us. this book is much more than just a textbook, and I look forward to being able to give copies of it to my friends and family." - Stuart Oskamp Claremont Graduate School; "...A rare gem that reflects great wisdom and human character." - Michael Wessels Professor of Psychology and Coordinator of Interdisciplinary Studies; "Ecological Psychology is not only a thorough and authoritative survey of the role of psychology is coming to play in the environmental crisis, but it is a commendable expression of professional conscience. I recommend it highly." - Theodore Roszak Director, Ecopsychology Institute, California State University, Hayward
